Today's Fair Housing Workshop...

Dear Friends,

Today(2/1/08) I held my Fair Housing Class at the Staten Island Board Of Realtors in NY.
It was a great class and I believe that we all had a great time.

Part of the class covers the Implications for Licensees and the steps Brokers and Agents should take to comply and understand Fair Housing laws.

I asked the Brokers and Agents the following questions:

Do you as the Broker or if you are a Agent does your Broker...

1. Make fair housing information readily available to sales people and employees?

2. Directly inform salespeople and employees of there responsibilities under fair housing laws through in-house or company training?

3. Have salespeople and employees acknowledge in writing that they understand the policies and have received training on them?

I was astonished by the response....
Only 1 Agent Said YES!

It seemed to me that every Broker would be training there Agents on Fair Housing.
But I was wrong only 1 Agent out of a room of over 20 Licensees said YES.

My next question:

-How many of you have the Fair Housing Poster prominently displayed in your office?

Only 2 Agent Said YES!

Ok, I thought to myself, maybe I'm not asking the question properly....

How many of you have the Fair Housing Poster any where in your offices?

Again Only 2 Agents Said YES!

I don't need to tell you that laws place the burden of responsibility for effecting and maintaining fair housing on licensees, and that Brokers are liable for the acts of their salespeople and employees, even if not aware of the activities, because you already know that.

You like me, know the best way to protect yourself and make sure your Agents understand the social and legal effects of Fair Housing is by training. Now, with me, I like to invest significant time immersing myself in training, while some people prefer to take it in bite-size chunks. Whatever your preference is, now is the best time to contact me at workshops@jeffreysjournal.com to speak about scheduling a non CE Fair Housing Workshop for your office.

If you attended today’s CE class and would like copies of the items we discussed please email me at fairhousing@jeffreysjournal.com be sure to include your name, office and contact info. Once I verify that you did attend the class I will fwd you the handouts.
